Tokyo Sushi Bar in Old Montreal
What's on the menu?
In addition to single fish sushi and sashimi, there are plenty of rolls for people who like their fish dressed up. Combination plates, such as the Sushi Edo plate of 9 pieces of maki and 6 pieces of nigiri for $20.75, are a good deal. Portions are generous, especially the salmon sashimi.
The rest of the menu is a bit hit and miss. While the seaweed salad is quite tasty, I am not as big a fan of the tempura, which could be more lightly breaded and less greasy, or the à la carte plates that come with too many mediocre stir-fried vegetables. All but the hungriest of people will find the table d'hôte and complete dinner options to be too much food. In general, I'd advise sticking with the sushi and sashimi.
Service and ambience
The people who run Tokyo Sushi Bar in Old Montreal care about their clientele, and the service is generally efficient. The ambience is neutral, but the seating area does include a high ceiling that helps to add a sense of spaciousness without making the space seem cold.
While the atmosphere in the main dining room is alright, the toilet facilities downstairs unfortunately give the customer too much of a look at the less than attractive back space. When I saw it last, the space needed some straightening up and a good cleaning.
The customer base is casual. It's mostly local with a few tourists mixed in, instead of the other way around as is often the case along St. Paul.
If you are looking for a spontaneous evening out and have a hankering for sushi, Tokyo Sushi Bar in Old Montreal is a good choice.
